Hakka Labs is looking for a junior Email Marketing Specialist to be responsible for all practical & technical implementation and execution of all things email across our international markets. Top data scientists, engineers, analysts and technical founders around the world look to our events for the best technical talks, career opportunities and community experiences.

Our flagship event, DataEngConf, is a deeply technical, 2-day, multi-track conference at the intersection of data -platforms, -science and -products beloved by our growing technical community and supported by amazing partners with strategic commitments to building the best AI products, teams and startups.

We also run a growing number of community-driven meetups which are springing up around the globe as ever increasing numbers of data geeks get excited about our vision and seek to participate.

The Role

The Email Marketing Specialist will report to the Head of Marketing, and will work to design and execute our email strategies. You will specifically own everything email and play a significant role in bolstering our pipeline efforts all the way from customer acquisition to brand evangelism and advocacy. At Hakka Labs we are successfully building a “no-bullshit” technical brand and the strength of our community is the main thing that differentiates us from the watered-down “data” conferences that already exist.

We source all our technical content from members of our own amazing community of data scientists, AI researchers, software engineers and academics. To succeed in this role, you must have previous experience engaging large online communities through email and comfortable understanding the language of software engineers and developers in order to construct and review email content for quality.

Our content takes the form of technical talks at DataEngConf, our meetups, video content for Youtube, and deeply technical blog content via our Data Writing Collective. You will utilize this content to design and execute “always-on” email campaigns in collaboration with the marketing team. Leading up to our major events you focus will switch from community engagement to sales enablement through email - imagine yourself as the ‘Editor’ for all our email communications.

This is a highly cross-functional and collaborative role where you will touch many different functional areas of Hakka Labs. You will be the central processing hub for all tactical and execution initiatives that involve email across the business and its respective units.

The role is suited for someone with digital marketing experience (email and/or digital product preferred) while the ideal candidate will also naturally think in terms of logic and systems. We are looking for someone who enjoys exercising both logical/rational thinking as well as creative thinking on a daily basis. You will also be responsible to extend the power of email to grow our community in our various meetups across the world.

It’s an exciting time of growth for our business - we’re launching events internationally and you’ll be an important part of our global expansion. In 2019 our main challenges are growing our 3 core DataEngConf events (annually in San Francisco, New York City and Barcelona), while launching our next key market in Asia as we expand our global footprint.

  • 1+ years experience working within the realm of email or in a similar digital role.
  • Passion for email: you love to read about digital marketing and email hacking in general.
  • Exceptional eye for detail: You will be the owner of all things email marketing at Hakka Labs and as a high-tier brand, every email needs to be scrutinized to perfection. Therefore, you will care about minute details or discrepancies and be able to spot them easily.
  • Proactive: this is a remote position which requires self-starters. We don’t measure how many hours you work, but you will be expected to consistently contribute value and deliver assignments by the deadlines you set.
  • Autonomous: you will have support and direction, but you will also be able to know how to manage your own time, prioritizing the projects you have and knowing when to get clarity on prioritization of projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. We are a remote company and this is a highly communicative role, so this goes without saying.
  • Demonstrated interest and proficiency in digital marketing, analytics, and ability to think like a product manager. You will be taking a product-centric approach to email marketing.
  • Comfortable with a fast-paced, and often rapidly-changing environment, with a strong emphasis on individual contributions and execution excellence.
  • Thorough: Understand that every word in outbound communications matter, for that reason we will only move applicants forward that include the words "Thorough is my middle name" in the "Cover Letter" box when you proceed to the application.
  • Curious: you are curious about how things work and why. You are not satisfied with a surface-level knowledge of how something works, or why users take certain actions.
  • Knowledge of online marketing and web best practices: you will have the opportunity to, and be expected to, contribute ideas for new initiatives and experiments aligned with modern digital marketing best practices.
  • A high degree of empathy: Email will be most effective when we can truly understand and predict the sentiment of our customer segments at any given point in time throughout the funnel.
